Aluminum Fences: Styles, Heights, Cost and Process

Aluminum Fence Styles

Flat-top styles hide the pickets under a top rail for a clean look. Spear-top styles extend the pickets above the rail for a traditional ornamental feel. Puppy-picket panels add extra pickets at the bottom to keep small dogs in. Decorative rings, finials and arched gates dress up an entrance.

Heights

Front-yard aluminum is usually 3 to 4 feet. Pool fences need at least 4 feet with self-closing, self-latching gates, and many homeowners choose 5 feet for added safety. We follow pool-barrier requirements for picket spacing and gate hardware.

Why Aluminum

  • Won’t rust and needs no painting
  • Keeps views open to the water, yard or garden
  • Meets pool-barrier rules with the right gates
  • Rackable panels follow slopes cleanly
  • Holds up well to salt air

Residential vs. Heavy-Duty Grades

Aluminum fence comes in residential, commercial and industrial grades. The difference is the thickness of the pickets, rails and posts. Residential grade is ideal for front yards, gardens and most pool enclosures. Heavier grades make sense where the fence may take more abuse, on long spans, or when you want a more substantial look. We match the grade to how the fence will be used.

Picket Spacing and Pool Rules

Standard aluminum panels usually have about 3¾ inches between pickets, which meets common pool-barrier spacing rules. Puppy-picket panels add short pickets between the full-height pickets at the bottom to stop small dogs from squeezing through. For pools, the bottom gap, the height, and gate hardware all matter, and we plan each run to meet the requirements for your town.

Installing on Slopes and Ledge

Rackable aluminum panels shift to follow a gentle slope so the bottom stays an even distance from the ground. On steeper grades we step the panels instead. Where we hit ledge, which is common across Rhode Island and Southeastern Connecticut, we can core-drill into the rock or use surface-mount posts on patios and walls.

Colors and Finishes

Black is the most common color and disappears into the landscape, keeping views open. Bronze warms up the look next to brick, stone and natural wood. White suits some coastal and cottage homes. Powder-coated finishes resist chalking and fading, and touch-up paint can cover scratches from yard work.

Aluminum Near the Water

Aluminum doesn’t rust, which makes it a strong choice for coastal homes. Salt air can still dull the finish over time, so an occasional rinse with fresh water helps. We use stainless or coated fasteners and hardware so latches and hinges keep working in salty, humid conditions.

What Affects the Cost

The price of a fence depends on its length, height, material, terrain and the number and type of gates. For a price on your actual yard, use our instant fence quote.

Our Aluminum Fence Installation Process

  1. Price it first. Use our instant fence quote for a fast estimate, then we confirm details on site.
  2. Measure and plan. We walk the line, review your survey or property pins, and plan gates, grade changes and any obstacles like ledge, roots or wet spots.
  3. Permits and utilities. We confirm local height, setback and pool rules and arrange utility mark-outs before digging.
  4. Installation. Our crews set posts in concrete below the frost line, hang panels level or stepped to the grade, and install gates that swing and latch smoothly.
  5. Final walk-through. We clean up, walk the finished fence with you, and make sure every gate works the way it should.

Built for New England Weather

Rhode Island and Southeastern Connecticut are hard on fences. Frost heave lifts shallow posts, coastal wind loads long runs, salt air corrodes cheap hardware, and many yards sit on ledge, clay or wet ground. We set posts in concrete below the frost line, size gate posts heavier than line posts, use galvanized, stainless or coated hardware, and adjust footings for soft or rocky ground. On waterfront and open lots we plan post spacing and rail strength for the wind.

Why Homeowners Choose Fence Pros Direct

Fence Pros Direct brings 25 years of construction experience to every residential fence. Our own crews handle the install from layout to cleanup, we give clear written pricing up front, and we focus on the details that make a fence look right for years: straight lines, consistent gaps, level gates and clean transitions at corners and slopes. Residential fencing is our focus, and we also take on commercial projects.

Permits, Property Lines and Neighbors

Fence rules vary from town to town. Many residential fences don’t need a building permit, but height limits, setbacks, corner-lot sight lines, pool-barrier rules and coastal or historic district review can apply. We check the requirements for your property before we schedule, and we always recommend confirming your property line with a survey or your property pins.
