Fence Gates: Types, Materials, Cost and Process
Gate Types
Walk gates give access to the backyard and side yard. Double drive gates open wide for vehicles, mowers and equipment. Decorative gates with arches and ornamental details make an entrance. Automated driveway gates open with a remote, keypad or phone app.
Materials
Gates are available in vinyl, wood, aluminum, chain link and steel to match your fence.
Automated Gates
Automated gates add convenience and security. We plan the operator, power and controls with the gate.
Walk Gate Basics
Walk gates are usually 4 feet wide, which is enough for a person, a wheelbarrow and most push mowers. If you have a riding mower, a garden tractor or plan to bring in equipment, a 5- or 6-foot single gate or a double gate is worth it. We set gate posts deeper and heavier than line posts, and on wood gates we add a diagonal brace from the bottom hinge side to the top latch side so the gate doesn’t sag over time.
Double Drive Gates
Double drive gates give vehicles and trailers access to the backyard or driveway. Typical openings run from 10 to 16 feet. Each leaf gets heavy-duty hinges, and we install a drop rod so one side can be locked in place while the other opens like a walk gate. On sloped driveways, we plan the swing direction and the hinge setup so the gate clears the ground.
Hinges, Latches and Hardware
Good hardware is the difference between a gate you like and one you fight with every day. Options include heavy-duty strap hinges, adjustable hinges that can be tuned as the gate settles, self-closing spring hinges and hydraulic closers for a smooth, controlled close. Latches range from simple gravity latches to two-sided latches you can open from either side, keyed and lockable latches, and magnetic pool latches. Near the coast, we use stainless or heavily coated hardware so salt air doesn’t seize it up.
Pool Gates
Pool gates are held to stricter rules than other gates. They commonly need to swing away from the pool, close on their own, and latch automatically, with the release mounted high enough that small children can’t reach it. We use self-closing hinges and magnetic latches designed for pool barriers and check that the gate closes and latches from any position.
Automated Gate Planning
An automated gate needs more planning than a standard gate. We look at whether a swing or slide gate fits the driveway, how much room the gate needs to open, where power will come from, and how you want to open it: remote, keypad, phone app, or a vehicle sensor on the way out. Safety features such as photo-eye sensors and obstruction detection stop the gate if a person, car or pet is in the way. We also plan for a manual release so the gate can be opened during a power outage.
Keeping Gates Working
Most gate problems start small. Check the hinges and latch once or twice a year, tighten loose screws or bolts, and lubricate moving parts. If a gate starts to drag, adjustable hinges or a turnbuckle brace can usually bring it back into line before it damages the latch or post.
What Affects the Cost
The price of a fence depends on its length, height, material, terrain and the number and type of gates. For a price on your actual yard, use our instant fence quote.

Our Gate Fence Installation Process
- Price it first. Use our instant fence quote for a fast estimate, then we confirm details on site.
- Measure and plan. We walk the line, review your survey or property pins, and plan gates, grade changes and any obstacles like ledge, roots or wet spots.
- Permits and utilities. We confirm local height, setback and pool rules and arrange utility mark-outs before digging.
- Installation. Our crews set posts in concrete below the frost line, hang panels level or stepped to the grade, and install gates that swing and latch smoothly.
- Final walk-through. We clean up, walk the finished fence with you, and make sure every gate works the way it should.
Built for New England Weather
Rhode Island and Southeastern Connecticut are hard on fences. Frost heave lifts shallow posts, coastal wind loads long runs, salt air corrodes cheap hardware, and many yards sit on ledge, clay or wet ground. We set posts in concrete below the frost line, size gate posts heavier than line posts, use galvanized, stainless or coated hardware, and adjust footings for soft or rocky ground. On waterfront and open lots we plan post spacing and rail strength for the wind.
Why Homeowners Choose Fence Pros Direct
Fence Pros Direct brings 25 years of construction experience to every residential fence. Our own crews handle the install from layout to cleanup, we give clear written pricing up front, and we focus on the details that make a fence look right for years: straight lines, consistent gaps, level gates and clean transitions at corners and slopes. Residential fencing is our focus, and we also take on commercial projects.
Permits, Property Lines and Neighbors
Fence rules vary from town to town. Many residential fences don’t need a building permit, but height limits, setbacks, corner-lot sight lines, pool-barrier rules and coastal or historic district review can apply. We check the requirements for your property before we schedule, and we always recommend confirming your property line with a survey or your property pins.
