Pool Fences: Styles, Heights, Cost and Process
Pool Fence Styles
Aluminum is our most popular pool fence: it meets barrier rules while keeping the pool and yard visible. Vinyl privacy enclosures add seclusion around the pool area. Other materials can work if they meet height, gap and climbability requirements.
Pool Barrier Basics
Pool barriers commonly require a minimum height of 4 feet, limited gaps under and between pickets, and gates that self-close and self-latch with the latch out of reach of small children. Exact rules vary by town, so we review the requirements for your property before installing.
Heights
Four feet is the common minimum. Many homeowners choose 5 feet for added safety, or 6 feet when privacy matters.
Planning the Pool Enclosure
A good pool fence plan starts with the layout of the yard: where the house doors open, where people walk to the pool, and where the equipment pad sits. Many homeowners enclose only the pool area rather than the whole yard, so kids and pets can play elsewhere safely. We plan gate locations for daily use and for maintenance access to filters and heaters.
Gate Hardware Details
Pool gates should swing out, away from the pool, so a child pushing on the gate closes it rather than opens it. Self-closing hinges pull the gate shut, and magnetic latches catch automatically. Latch releases are mounted high on the gate or on the pool side so small children can’t reach them. We test gates from every open position to make sure they close and latch.
Climbability and Gaps
Pool barriers are designed so children can’t climb over or squeeze through. That means limiting horizontal rails that act like ladder rungs on the outside, controlling the spacing between pickets, and keeping the bottom gap small, even on uneven ground. Furniture, planters and equipment should stay away from the outside of the fence so they can’t be used to climb it.
Above-Ground Pools and Hot Tubs
Above-ground pools often have their own deck barriers and ladders, but many homeowners add a fence around the deck or yard for extra safety. Hot tubs usually rely on locking covers, though a short decorative fence or screen can add privacy. We review what your town expects for each setup.
Inspections and Insurance
Many towns inspect pool barriers before final approval of a new pool, and insurers may ask about fencing and gates. Keeping a copy of your fence details and gate hardware handy makes those conversations simpler. Check gate latches and hinges every season and adjust them if the gate stops closing on its own.
What Affects the Cost
The price of a fence depends on its length, height, material, terrain and the number and type of gates. For a price on your actual yard, use our instant fence quote.

Our Pool Fence Installation Process
- Price it first. Use our instant fence quote for a fast estimate, then we confirm details on site.
- Measure and plan. We walk the line, review your survey or property pins, and plan gates, grade changes and any obstacles like ledge, roots or wet spots.
- Permits and utilities. We confirm local height, setback and pool rules and arrange utility mark-outs before digging.
- Installation. Our crews set posts in concrete below the frost line, hang panels level or stepped to the grade, and install gates that swing and latch smoothly.
- Final walk-through. We clean up, walk the finished fence with you, and make sure every gate works the way it should.
Built for New England Weather
Rhode Island and Southeastern Connecticut are hard on fences. Frost heave lifts shallow posts, coastal wind loads long runs, salt air corrodes cheap hardware, and many yards sit on ledge, clay or wet ground. We set posts in concrete below the frost line, size gate posts heavier than line posts, use galvanized, stainless or coated hardware, and adjust footings for soft or rocky ground. On waterfront and open lots we plan post spacing and rail strength for the wind.
Why Homeowners Choose Fence Pros Direct
Fence Pros Direct brings 25 years of construction experience to every residential fence. Our own crews handle the install from layout to cleanup, we give clear written pricing up front, and we focus on the details that make a fence look right for years: straight lines, consistent gaps, level gates and clean transitions at corners and slopes. Residential fencing is our focus, and we also take on commercial projects.
Permits, Property Lines and Neighbors
Fence rules vary from town to town. Many residential fences don’t need a building permit, but height limits, setbacks, corner-lot sight lines, pool-barrier rules and coastal or historic district review can apply. We check the requirements for your property before we schedule, and we always recommend confirming your property line with a survey or your property pins.
