Picket Fences: Styles, Heights, Cost and Process

Picket Fence Styles

Straight-top picket gives a clean, even line. Scalloped and arched pickets dip between posts for a softer look. Picket shapes range from pointed and dog-ear to French gothic. Matching gates and arbors finish an entrance.

Heights

Picket fences are usually 3 to 4 feet tall. Most towns limit front-yard fence height, and picket fences fit comfortably within those rules.

Vinyl vs. Wood Picket

Vinyl picket stays white without paint and resists rot. Cedar picket has a natural look and can be painted or stained.

Picket Spacing, Shapes and Proportions

Picket spacing changes the whole look of the fence. Tight spacing of about 1.5 to 2 inches feels more formal and helps keep small dogs and rabbits out of a garden. Wider spacing of around 3 inches feels lighter and more open, and it shows off plantings behind the fence. Picket width matters too: narrow 3-inch pickets suit smaller capes and cottages, while 4- to 6-inch pickets have more presence in front of a larger colonial.

Picket tops set the style. Dog-ear tops are simple and casual. Pointed or spear tops feel traditional. French gothic tops, with their rounded spade shape, are a New England favorite on historic homes. Scalloped runs dip between posts, and arched runs rise toward the center for a softer line. We’ll help you pick a profile that fits the architecture of your house, not just the catalog.

Front-Yard Rules and Sight Lines

Most picket fences go in the front yard, which is where town rules are strictest. Many towns cap front-yard fences at about 3 to 4 feet, and corner lots often have a sight-triangle near the intersection where fences must stay low so drivers can see traffic. Historic districts in towns like Newport, Bristol, Wickford and Stonington may review fence style and material before you build. We check these rules for your property before we order material, and we set the fence a safe distance off the property line and sidewalk.

Posts, Caps and Finishing Details

The details are what make a picket fence look custom. Posts can be finished with flat caps, pyramid caps, New England caps or decorative ball caps. On wood fences, we set pressure-treated posts in concrete and use galvanized or stainless fasteners so rust stains do not bleed onto the pickets. Corners and ends get heavier posts, and gate openings are framed so the gate hangs true. On vinyl fences, routed posts and rails lock the panels together without visible fasteners.

Gardens, Arbors and Entrances

Picket fences pair naturally with gardens. A 3-foot picket fence keeps foot traffic out of flower beds while staying low enough to show off the plantings. Adding an arbor over the front gate creates a focal point and a frame for climbing roses or clematis. Matching walk gates can be straight-top or arched, and we install self-closing hinges if you want the gate to swing shut behind you.

Caring for a Picket Fence

Vinyl picket fences only need an occasional rinse with a hose or mild soap to stay bright white. Wood picket fences look best with fresh paint or solid stain every few years, especially on the south-facing side and near sprinklers. Keep mulch and soil pulled back from the bottom of the pickets so they can dry out after rain, and trim shrubs so they don’t push against the fence.

What Affects the Cost

The price of a fence depends on its length, height, material, terrain and the number and type of gates. For a price on your actual yard, use our instant fence quote.

Our Picket Fence Installation Process

  1. Price it first. Use our instant fence quote for a fast estimate, then we confirm details on site.
  2. Measure and plan. We walk the line, review your survey or property pins, and plan gates, grade changes and any obstacles like ledge, roots or wet spots.
  3. Permits and utilities. We confirm local height, setback and pool rules and arrange utility mark-outs before digging.
  4. Installation. Our crews set posts in concrete below the frost line, hang panels level or stepped to the grade, and install gates that swing and latch smoothly.
  5. Final walk-through. We clean up, walk the finished fence with you, and make sure every gate works the way it should.

Built for New England Weather

Rhode Island and Southeastern Connecticut are hard on fences. Frost heave lifts shallow posts, coastal wind loads long runs, salt air corrodes cheap hardware, and many yards sit on ledge, clay or wet ground. We set posts in concrete below the frost line, size gate posts heavier than line posts, use galvanized, stainless or coated hardware, and adjust footings for soft or rocky ground. On waterfront and open lots we plan post spacing and rail strength for the wind.

Why Homeowners Choose Fence Pros Direct

Fence Pros Direct brings 25 years of construction experience to every residential fence. Our own crews handle the install from layout to cleanup, we give clear written pricing up front, and we focus on the details that make a fence look right for years: straight lines, consistent gaps, level gates and clean transitions at corners and slopes. Residential fencing is our focus, and we also take on commercial projects.

Permits, Property Lines and Neighbors

Fence rules vary from town to town. Many residential fences don’t need a building permit, but height limits, setbacks, corner-lot sight lines, pool-barrier rules and coastal or historic district review can apply. We check the requirements for your property before we schedule, and we always recommend confirming your property line with a survey or your property pins.
