Backyard Privacy, Built to Last

Privacy Fences for Rhode Island & Southeastern Connecticut Homes

A privacy fence turns a backyard into an outdoor room. It blocks sight lines from the street and the neighbors, cuts down on road noise, keeps kids and dogs in, and gives a pool, patio or garden a finished edge. Fence Pros Direct installs privacy fences across Rhode Island and Southeastern Connecticut in vinyl, cedar, spruce and composite, from 4-foot screens to full 6- and 8-foot enclosures.

Every job is measured, staked and set by our own crews. We follow the grade on sloped lots, set posts in concrete below the frost line, and finish with gates that line up and latch the way they should.

Privacy Fences: Styles, Heights, Cost and Process

Privacy Fence Styles

Most of our privacy work falls into a handful of proven styles. Solid vinyl privacy is the most requested: tongue-and-groove panels with no gaps, available in white, tan, gray and wood-grain finishes, and it never needs paint or stain. Cedar board-on-board overlaps its pickets so there are no see-through gaps even as the wood dries, and it weathers to a soft silver gray if you leave it natural. Spruce stockade is the classic New England pointed-top fence and the most budget-friendly way to enclose a large yard.

If you want privacy without a solid wall, a lattice or picket top adds a decorative band along the upper foot of a vinyl or cedar panel, letting light and air through while keeping the lower five feet fully private. Scalloped and arched tops soften long runs, and horizontal board and composite styles give a modern look that pairs well with newer homes and hardscape. We can also mix styles: a full-height privacy run along the back line, stepping down to a shorter picket or aluminum fence toward the front yard.

Heights and Layout

Six feet is the standard backyard privacy height and covers most needs. Four- and five-foot privacy panels work well around patios, hot tubs and dog runs where you want screening without closing in the space. Some towns allow taller fences along rear and side lot lines, and many limit front-yard fences to around four feet, so we confirm local height rules and setbacks before we order material.

Layout matters as much as height. We walk the line with you, mark property pins or your survey, and plan gate locations for mowers, wheelbarrows and trash bins. On sloped lots we either step the panels so each section stays level or rake them to follow the ground, depending on the style and the look you want.

Materials: Vinyl vs. Wood vs. Composite

Vinyl costs more up front than wood but needs almost no upkeep: no paint, no stain, no rot. A hose rinse once or twice a year keeps it clean. Cedar is naturally rot-resistant, has a warm look and can be stained or left to weather. Pressure-treated spruce and pine are the most affordable and work well for long property lines. Composite and wood-on-steel-post systems cost the most and deliver a clean, contemporary look with very little maintenance.

Near the coast, salt air and wind exposure push many homeowners toward vinyl or composite, and we size posts and footings for wind load on open, waterfront lots.

What Affects the Cost

The price of a fence depends on its length, height, material, terrain and the number and type of gates. For a price on your actual yard, use our instant fence quote.

Our Privacy Fence Installation Process

  1. Price it first. Use our instant fence quote for a fast estimate, then we confirm details on site.
  2. Measure and plan. We walk the line, review your survey or property pins, and plan gates, grade changes and any obstacles like ledge, roots or wet spots.
  3. Permits and utilities. We confirm local height, setback and pool rules and arrange utility mark-outs before digging.
  4. Installation. Our crews set posts in concrete below the frost line, hang panels level or stepped to the grade, and install gates that swing and latch smoothly.
  5. Final walk-through. We clean up, walk the finished fence with you, and make sure every gate works the way it should.

Built for New England Weather

Rhode Island and Southeastern Connecticut are hard on fences. Frost heave lifts shallow posts, coastal wind loads long runs, salt air corrodes cheap hardware, and many yards sit on ledge, clay or wet ground. We set posts in concrete below the frost line, size gate posts heavier than line posts, use galvanized, stainless or coated hardware, and adjust footings for soft or rocky ground. On waterfront and open lots we plan post spacing and rail strength for the wind.

Why Homeowners Choose Fence Pros Direct

Fence Pros Direct brings 25 years of construction experience to every residential fence. Our own crews handle the install from layout to cleanup, we give clear written pricing up front, and we focus on the details that make a fence look right for years: straight lines, consistent gaps, level gates and clean transitions at corners and slopes. Residential fencing is our focus, and we also take on commercial projects.

Permits, Property Lines and Neighbors

Fence rules vary from town to town. Many residential fences don’t need a building permit, but height limits, setbacks, corner-lot sight lines, pool-barrier rules and coastal or historic district review can apply. We check the requirements for your property before we schedule, and we always recommend confirming your property line with a survey or your property pins.

Privacy Fence FAQ

Six feet is the most common backyard height and is allowed in most towns. Front-yard fences are often limited to about four feet, and some towns allow taller fences on rear lines. We check your town’s rules before we order material.

Vinyl costs more up front but needs almost no maintenance. Cedar and spruce cost less and give a natural look, but need occasional stain or sealer to look their best. Near the water, many homeowners choose vinyl.

Most residential privacy fences are installed in one to three days once material arrives, depending on length, gates and ground conditions.

Yes. We step or rake the panels to follow the grade and keep the bottom gap consistent so the fence looks clean and keeps pets in.
