Low-Maintenance Fencing
Vinyl Fences That Look Great Year After Year
Vinyl is the most popular fence material we install, and for good reason. It never needs painting or staining, it won’t rot, splinter or attract insects, and it holds up to New England winters and salt air. Fence Pros Direct installs vinyl privacy, semi-privacy, picket and post-and-rail fences across Rhode Island and Southeastern Connecticut.
We carry vinyl in white, tan, gray, almond and wood-grain textures, with matching gates, post caps and decorative tops, and we install every fence with our own crews.

Vinyl Fences: Styles, Heights, Cost and Process
Vinyl Fence Styles
Solid privacy panels are the go-to for backyards and pool areas. Lattice-top and picket-top privacy add a decorative upper band that softens a long run. Semi-privacy styles use alternating boards or small gaps to let air move through while still screening most of the view. Vinyl picket fences, three to four feet tall, are a classic front-yard choice for colonials and capes, and post-and-rail vinyl outlines larger lots and fields with almost no upkeep.
Color and texture make a big difference. White remains the most requested, especially with white trim on the house. Tan, gray and wood-grain finishes blend into wooded lots and coastal landscaping and show less dirt.
Heights
Vinyl privacy comes in 4, 5 and 6 foot heights, with 6 feet the standard for backyards. Picket fences are typically 3 to 4 feet. Pool enclosures need at least 4 feet and the right gate hardware. We confirm your town’s height and setback limits before ordering.
Why Homeowners Choose Vinyl
- No painting, staining or sealing
- Will not rot, warp or splinter
- Easy to clean with a hose or mild soap
- Stands up well to salt air near the coast
- Consistent look from panel to panel
The trade-off is cost: vinyl runs more up front than spruce or pine. Over 15 to 20 years, with no stain or paint to buy, many homeowners find vinyl comes out ahead.
Choosing Vinyl Quality
Not all vinyl fence is the same. Better vinyl uses thicker walls on posts and rails, aluminum-reinforced bottom rails on wider panels, and virgin vinyl with UV inhibitors so the color stays consistent. Thin, hollow rails can sag over time, especially on 8-foot panels in full sun. Ask about wall thickness, rail reinforcement and how pickets lock into the rails. We install vinyl systems with routed posts and reinforced rails so panels stay straight and gates don’t drop.
Gates and Hardware for Vinyl
Vinyl gates need extra support because the material flexes more than wood. We use aluminum-reinforced gate frames, heavy-duty self-closing hinges and latches designed for vinyl, and gate posts with an aluminum insert or a steel core so the gate stays square. Wider openings get double gates with a drop rod rather than one long, heavy gate.
Vinyl in Winter and Summer
Vinyl expands in summer heat and contracts in winter cold. Good installation leaves room in the rails for that movement so panels don’t buckle or pop out. In cold weather vinyl becomes less flexible, so it’s worth keeping snowblowers and plows from throwing heavy, icy snow against the fence. Posts set in concrete below the frost line keep frost heave from lifting the fence out of line.
Cleaning and Care
Most vinyl fences only need a rinse with a garden hose once or twice a year. For green mildew on the shady side, a soft brush with mild soap and water works well. Avoid harsh solvents and pressure washers set too close, which can scratch the surface. Keep sprinklers from hitting the fence all day, trim vines and shrubs back, and check gate hinges and latches each spring.
Matching Your Home and Neighborhood
White vinyl stands out crisply against colonials and capes with white trim. Tan, almond, gray and wood-grain textures blend better with wooded lots, stone walls and shingle-style coastal homes. In many neighborhoods a mix works well: privacy vinyl around the backyard and a shorter vinyl picket in the front, in the same color, for a coordinated look.
What Affects the Cost
The price of a fence depends on its length, height, material, terrain and the number and type of gates. For a price on your actual yard, use our instant fence quote.

Our Vinyl Fence Installation Process
- Price it first. Use our instant fence quote for a fast estimate, then we confirm details on site.
- Measure and plan. We walk the line, review your survey or property pins, and plan gates, grade changes and any obstacles like ledge, roots or wet spots.
- Permits and utilities. We confirm local height, setback and pool rules and arrange utility mark-outs before digging.
- Installation. Our crews set posts in concrete below the frost line, hang panels level or stepped to the grade, and install gates that swing and latch smoothly.
- Final walk-through. We clean up, walk the finished fence with you, and make sure every gate works the way it should.
Built for New England Weather
Rhode Island and Southeastern Connecticut are hard on fences. Frost heave lifts shallow posts, coastal wind loads long runs, salt air corrodes cheap hardware, and many yards sit on ledge, clay or wet ground. We set posts in concrete below the frost line, size gate posts heavier than line posts, use galvanized, stainless or coated hardware, and adjust footings for soft or rocky ground. On waterfront and open lots we plan post spacing and rail strength for the wind.
Why Homeowners Choose Fence Pros Direct
Fence Pros Direct brings 25 years of construction experience to every residential fence. Our own crews handle the install from layout to cleanup, we give clear written pricing up front, and we focus on the details that make a fence look right for years: straight lines, consistent gaps, level gates and clean transitions at corners and slopes. Residential fencing is our focus, and we also take on commercial projects.
Permits, Property Lines and Neighbors
Fence rules vary from town to town. Many residential fences don’t need a building permit, but height limits, setbacks, corner-lot sight lines, pool-barrier rules and coastal or historic district review can apply. We check the requirements for your property before we schedule, and we always recommend confirming your property line with a survey or your property pins.
