Chain Link Fences: Styles, Heights, Cost and Process
Chain Link Options
Galvanized chain link is the classic silver fence, strong and economical. Black vinyl-coated chain link blends into lawns and trees and is the most popular residential choice today. Privacy slats woven into the mesh add screening. We install walk gates and double drive gates to match.
Heights
Residential chain link is usually 4 feet for yards and dogs, with 5 and 6 foot heights for larger dogs, sports areas and property lines.
Why Chain Link
- Lowest cost per foot of any fence
- Very durable with almost no maintenance
- Great for dogs and kids
- Easy to add slats for privacy
Gauge, Mesh Size and Fabric
Chain link is described by wire gauge and mesh size. A lower gauge number means thicker wire: 9-gauge is a sturdy residential and light commercial standard, while 11-gauge is lighter. Common mesh openings are around 2 inches; smaller mesh is harder to climb and better for small pets. Galvanized fabric is zinc-coated for rust protection, and vinyl-coated fabric adds a colored layer on top for a cleaner look and extra durability.
Framework and Posts
The framework is what makes a chain link fence last. Terminal posts at ends, corners and gates are heavier than line posts and set in concrete. A top rail keeps the fabric tight and straight, and a bottom tension wire reduces gaps that dogs can push under. Gate posts are sized for the weight and width of the gate so gates don’t sag.
Privacy Slats and Screening
Privacy slats slide vertically or diagonally through the mesh to block most of the view. They come in several colors, and newer hedge-style slats mimic greenery. Slats add wind load to the fence, so on long or exposed runs we may use heavier posts or tighter post spacing. Windscreen fabric is another option for sports areas and temporary screening.
Gates for Chain Link
Chain link walk gates are typically 4 feet wide, and double drive gates allow vehicles and equipment into the yard. For wide openings, cantilever slide gates roll to the side without needing a swing area. Gate latches can be padlocked, and self-closing hinges help keep gates shut for pets and pools.
Where Chain Link Works Best
Chain link is ideal for dog runs, large backyards, property lines, gardens and sports areas, and for any job where you want a durable fence at the lowest cost. Black vinyl-coated chain link is the most popular residential choice because it blends into lawns and trees far better than bare galvanized wire.
What Affects the Cost
The price of a fence depends on its length, height, material, terrain and the number and type of gates. For a price on your actual yard, use our instant fence quote.

Our Chain Link Fence Installation Process
- Price it first. Use our instant fence quote for a fast estimate, then we confirm details on site.
- Measure and plan. We walk the line, review your survey or property pins, and plan gates, grade changes and any obstacles like ledge, roots or wet spots.
- Permits and utilities. We confirm local height, setback and pool rules and arrange utility mark-outs before digging.
- Installation. Our crews set posts in concrete below the frost line, hang panels level or stepped to the grade, and install gates that swing and latch smoothly.
- Final walk-through. We clean up, walk the finished fence with you, and make sure every gate works the way it should.
Built for New England Weather
Rhode Island and Southeastern Connecticut are hard on fences. Frost heave lifts shallow posts, coastal wind loads long runs, salt air corrodes cheap hardware, and many yards sit on ledge, clay or wet ground. We set posts in concrete below the frost line, size gate posts heavier than line posts, use galvanized, stainless or coated hardware, and adjust footings for soft or rocky ground. On waterfront and open lots we plan post spacing and rail strength for the wind.
Why Homeowners Choose Fence Pros Direct
Fence Pros Direct brings 25 years of construction experience to every residential fence. Our own crews handle the install from layout to cleanup, we give clear written pricing up front, and we focus on the details that make a fence look right for years: straight lines, consistent gaps, level gates and clean transitions at corners and slopes. Residential fencing is our focus, and we also take on commercial projects.
Permits, Property Lines and Neighbors
Fence rules vary from town to town. Many residential fences don’t need a building permit, but height limits, setbacks, corner-lot sight lines, pool-barrier rules and coastal or historic district review can apply. We check the requirements for your property before we schedule, and we always recommend confirming your property line with a survey or your property pins.
