Dog Fences: Styles, Heights, Cost and Process

Dog Fence Options

Chain link is economical and strong. Vinyl or wood privacy blocks views that trigger barking. Aluminum with puppy pickets keeps small dogs in. Split rail with welded wire gives a natural look on larger lots.

Choosing a Height

Four feet works for many small and medium dogs. Large or athletic dogs often need 5 to 6 feet. Diggers may need a buried wire barrier along the bottom.

Matching the Fence to Your Dog

The right dog fence depends on the dog. Small breeds can slip through gaps that look harmless, so tighter spacing or puppy-picket panels at the bottom are important. Jumpers such as huskies, shepherds and many hunting breeds need 5 to 6 feet of height and a fence without horizontal rails on the outside that they can climb. Diggers need protection at the bottom of the fence. Dogs that bark at people, cars and other dogs often settle down behind a solid privacy fence because they can’t see what’s on the other side.

Stopping Digging and Escapes

Most dog escapes happen at the bottom of the fence or at the gate. We keep the bottom gap small and consistent, even on slopes, by stepping or raking panels to follow the grade. For dogs that dig, we can bury a strip of welded wire or add a concrete or stone footer along the line. Gates are the other weak point: we install self-closing hinges and latches that close firmly, and we can add a second latch or a lockable latch on gates that kids or service workers use.

Dog Runs and Partial Enclosures

You don’t have to fence the whole property. A dog run off the back door, or a fenced section of the backyard, can give your dog a safe space while keeping the rest of the yard open. We often build a 4- to 6-foot enclosure next to the house with a gate onto the deck or patio. Chain link is the most practical for runs, while vinyl or wood privacy panels keep it looking like part of the yard.

Comfort and Safety Inside the Fence

Plan for shade and water inside the fenced area. Leave space around trees for shade, and think about where your dog will wear a path along the fence line. Avoid sharp-topped pickets for dogs that like to jump at the fence. Check that no plants inside the fence are toxic to dogs. On busy streets, a solid fence along the road side cuts down on barking and the urge to chase.

Invisible Fences vs. Physical Fences

Electronic or invisible fences can work for some dogs, but they won’t keep other animals or people out, and some dogs run through the boundary when excited. A physical fence works without training collars and also keeps neighbor dogs, deer and wildlife out. Many homeowners use both: a physical fence around the backyard and an electronic boundary for the open front lawn.

What Affects the Cost

The price of a fence depends on its length, height, material, terrain and the number and type of gates. For a price on your actual yard, use our instant fence quote.

Our Dog Fence Installation Process

  1. Price it first. Use our instant fence quote for a fast estimate, then we confirm details on site.
  2. Measure and plan. We walk the line, review your survey or property pins, and plan gates, grade changes and any obstacles like ledge, roots or wet spots.
  3. Permits and utilities. We confirm local height, setback and pool rules and arrange utility mark-outs before digging.
  4. Installation. Our crews set posts in concrete below the frost line, hang panels level or stepped to the grade, and install gates that swing and latch smoothly.
  5. Final walk-through. We clean up, walk the finished fence with you, and make sure every gate works the way it should.

Built for New England Weather

Rhode Island and Southeastern Connecticut are hard on fences. Frost heave lifts shallow posts, coastal wind loads long runs, salt air corrodes cheap hardware, and many yards sit on ledge, clay or wet ground. We set posts in concrete below the frost line, size gate posts heavier than line posts, use galvanized, stainless or coated hardware, and adjust footings for soft or rocky ground. On waterfront and open lots we plan post spacing and rail strength for the wind.

Why Homeowners Choose Fence Pros Direct

Fence Pros Direct brings 25 years of construction experience to every residential fence. Our own crews handle the install from layout to cleanup, we give clear written pricing up front, and we focus on the details that make a fence look right for years: straight lines, consistent gaps, level gates and clean transitions at corners and slopes. Residential fencing is our focus, and we also take on commercial projects.

Permits, Property Lines and Neighbors

Fence rules vary from town to town. Many residential fences don’t need a building permit, but height limits, setbacks, corner-lot sight lines, pool-barrier rules and coastal or historic district review can apply. We check the requirements for your property before we schedule, and we always recommend confirming your property line with a survey or your property pins.
